Dispute - Hem/Lindheim versus Haukvik/Laavell

Halvard Erlingsson Haukvik with some friends and relatives paid an unexpected visit to Hem. It ended in a dispute, with Halvard hitting Borgar Vetrlidesson Hem with a spear in the arm. Then Halvard pushed Borgar's wife Aslaug Saksabjornsdatter to the ground, stepped on her and called her the worst woman that ever had walked on this ground. Borgar killed Halvard.

Later, Halvard Tordsson Laavell, his brother Lidvard and some men whom Borgar did not remember the name of attacked him and beat him in the head. Geirmund Erlingsson hit Borgar hard in the butt. Vetrlide Borgarsson who was with his father stuck Halvard Tolfsson with the spear.

Because of the many parties involved there were three court cases.

The Hem farmers met the Haukvik/Laavell farmers in Skien in December, 1337. The parties accused each other of assault in word and deed, but left it to the judges to determine the fines. Both parties promised to obey the verdicts.

In the first case, Erling Haukvik was charged for his son Halvard Erlingsson sticking Borgar in the arm with a spear and throwing Aslaug to the ground, stepping on her and calling her the worst woman eho had ever been on this grass. To be free of this charge, Erling Haukvik had to find six witnesses to swear that he was innocent. If unable to do this, he must pay Borgar 4 Marks in gold for the injury by the spear and 4 Marks in gold because Aslaug was dishonoured. All other troubles that had arisen between Halvard Erlingsson and Borgar's sons, would be ignored.

In the second case, Erling Haukvik sued Borgar Hem and his son Alvir for killing his son Halvard Erlingsson. Borgar and Alvir had to find twelve witnesses to swear that they were innocent. Aslaug and the son Vetrlide were not charged.

In the third case, Borgar sued Halvard Tordsson and Halvard had to pay 3 Marks for the main cut he gave Borgar. Halvard's brother Lidvard had to pay Borgar 2 Marks in gold for attacking him with a spear. Geirmund had to pay Borgar 12 Oyrers for beating him in the butt with the spear.

Nobody knew who gave Borgar the main cut. All admitted it was a joint action, therefore all five; Steinulv Tordsson from Laavell, Geirmund Erlingsson from Haukvik, Hallvard Tordsson, brother Lidvard and Torer Arnasson had to pay Borgar 24 Oyrers.

Borgar Vetrlidesson Hem was killed on the Lund farm Lund in Sandsvaer on February 4, 1336 when he met in an inheritance issue for his son, where disagreements and strife ended in Jon Sigurdsson killing Borgar with an axe. The court sentence against Jon Sigurdsson was that he had to pay 3 Marks for "Landsvist", the kings grace, 3 Marks for "tegn", the kings grace, and 2 Marks for "fred", legal compensation, to Borgar's heirs.
